We Love Our Nurses - Kathy

Date published: February 10, 2020

2020 is the Year of the Nurse and the Midwife and in honor, Stat Staff wants to honor you, our nurses, with a monthly spotlight.

For the first spotlight, we’re talking with Stat Staff’s Director of Clinical Services, Kathy Mion, BSN, RN.

How long have you been a nurse?
I have been a nurse for 33 years.

What made you want to be a nurse?
I am not that person who had the light shine down on me, leading me to the path of nursing. For me, it was a career for endless opportunities. Nursing allows for continuous education and endless learning of new things over my entire career. No two days are ever the same. Nurses are respected and viewed as the country's most honest and ethical people. Nurses' job security is evident, and they can work anywhere in the world.

What's the best day you've had as a nurse?
It's impossible to pick a best day when caring for people for 33 years. One day, however, truly sticks out in my mind when I was a NAVY nurse serving overseas in Operation Desert Shield/Desert Storm.

There was a US tank explosion with one young soldier who survived this tragic accident. After recovering for 2 weeks on my unit in the ICU, I was the one who walked him out of the hospital to a phonebooth to call his mom for the first time since the accident. Everyone had tears.
