Tips for Nurses Traveling with Pets

Date published: September 2, 2014

Can you be a travel nurse with pets?

People ask us about tips for nurses traveling with pets, and we understand – you might be hesitant to take a travel assignment if you have pets because you aren’t sure where to start or what options are out there for you.

But here are some tips to make your life easier so you can take that travel assignment and bring Fido with you too!

Have your recruiter look for pet-friendly specific housing.

At Stat Staff, we work with our nurses to find housing that allows them to bring pets -- and it doesn’t have to be a hotel! We’ve placed RNs in pet-friendly apartments and full homes. We’re here to help you on your journey – each step of the way

Look for local pet boarding while on assignment.

You’re going to be at work all day for up to 12 hours, so you’ll need to make sure that your pet is comfortable while you’re not home. Look for boarding options local to where your assignment will be.

Explore your new home with your pet.

You’re going to be in a new city for 8 or 13 weeks, and you’ll have a built-in best friend to explore the city with! Take advantage of local dog parks and other pet-friendly sites in your new travel home to get acclimated and comfortable your new space

Make your travel housing feel like home.

Organize the space like your real home if possible. Set up familiar items in the house such as your pet’s bed or food bowls in the same spot you’d put it at home. Leave to run errands for a bit, and them come back to let your pet know this is home for now. If they feel comfortable, they’ll act like they do at home, and you won’t have to worry about them while at work

Remember, Stat Staff is here to help you find housing and to make your travel assignment comfortable whether you’re traveling with pets or not. Be sure to contact us for information on our travel assignments or housing options if you would like to learn more at 518-871-1611.
