Staying Active in the Workplace

Long work hours can take a toll on the mind and body, and many people struggle with finding the time for staying active in the workplace, especially in the field of nursing. Give yourself the energy you need to tackle that 12-hour shift by implementing a plan to stay active at work. Developing exercise habits is imperative, as it equates to a healthier, happier you.

Here are a few tips and ways to maximize your time and increase energy levels:

Say “no” to the elevator. 

Instead of taking the elevator every time you need to change floors, don’t be afraid to try taking the stairs as a healthier alternative. Stair climbing is one of the best exercises out there, as it burns more calories than traditional walking and increases blood flow to all areas of the body. It’s even recommended as a way to increase energy and loosen tension during a stressful day. This is perfect for nurses who struggle with finding the energy to push through a shift. Did you know? Taking the stairs is often faster than taking the elevator-- just an added bonus.

Use your lunch break wisely. 

Be honest, how many times a week do you get outside to take a walk during your shift? Taking regular breaks to move and stretch throughout the day is a great way to reboot energy levels. Using your lunch break at least once a week to go outdoors and take a 30-minute walk adds that much-needed exercise to your daily routine. Not only will you be burning calories, but the fresh air will also have a positive impact on your mood. You will come back to work after your walk feeling refreshed, energized, and ready to face whatever the rest of the day has in store.

Change where you park. 

Park your car further away from the entrance. This will encourage you to walk an additional distance into work each day. Many people do not know the extensive benefits of walking that “extra mile” can have on your overall health. Walking not only helps maintain a healthy weight, but it also improves mood, balance, coordination, and helps to strengthen your bones and muscles. Think about it this way—you can burn an extra ten calories each time you park further away. If you make that extra walk twice a day for a year, it adds up to 7,300 calories or a little over two pounds!
