Since 1982, the Ronald McDonald House Charities of the Capital Region (RMHC) has served the community by providing free of charge housing for families whose children are receiving critical care at nearby hospitals1.
The RMHC helps ease families' emotional and financial burdens by offering their house as a home away from home. It offers 25 cozy rooms for families to stay in and spacious common areas, living rooms, play areas, and even a library and computer.
The Albany Ronald McDonald House volunteers know the difficulties placed upon families with children facing serious health challenges. The volunteers want to ensure that everyone who comes to the Albany Ronald McDonald House experiences a stay that is as calm, restful, and as undisturbed as possible. Through their compassion and understanding, they are a spark of kindness right in the heart of Albany.
Interview with Kimmy Venter RMHC of the Capital Region
Who are you, and what's your role at your charity?
I am the Director of Communications since April. My role is to tell the story of the organization and to raise the visibility of the organization and what people can do to help.
How are families you help positively impacted by donations?
Families are helped through our three main programs that are funded by donations: The Ronald McDonald House in Albany, The Ronald McDonald Family Room inside of the Albany Medical Center, and The Ronald McDonald Care Mobile which has two fully equipped dentist offices inside. We want to make sure people's basic needs are taken care of and the donations allow us to keep our programs functioning fully."
What items are RMHC in need of the most?
Financial donations always go a long way to allow us to meet changing needs. We also love meal sponsors from restaurants that want to help us. Due to COVID-19, our volunteers are unable to cook meals for our visitors, so by providing funds for this service we are able to help more families in need. We also have items on our Wishlist on our website at rmhcofalbany.org
What's your favorite part of working at RMHC?
For me, and I have a lot to learn, is to be able to interact with families who benefit for our program, and to hear in their words how much we've helped them, is amazing.
